The unofficial version of the video streaming player saw developers create a workaround portal so PS3 owners could access the iPlayer. The hack allows gamers to stream BBC content directly to their TVs via the games console.

PS3 owners can access the service at http://ps3iplayer.com and the developers claim they created the workaround in part to show how easy it is to get the iPlayer, which launched in December, to work on the Sony device.

The BBC has yet to create an official version of the iPlayer for the PS3 or Microsoft’s Xbox 360 but last week the broadcaster named the Wii as the first console to officially gain access to the service. The broadcaster claims that the problem isn’t on their end and that the trouble lies with Sony and Microsoft as the two firms have expressed concerns over the way in which content streamed to the devices is controlled.

History

The Playstation 3 Console was originally available in two forms, the 20 GB Basic model and the 60 GB Premium model. The main differences between the 20GB and the larger models are that the 20GB model comes with less features; it does not have access to wi-fi and flash memory like its larger models.

At its North American launch fourteen titles were available for the Playstation 3 Console. At its launch in Europe in 2007 24 titles were available and more are set to be released. In terms of features, some of the main new ones include Bluetooth controllers, Wi-fi internet access, Saxaxis controllers which respond to movement and a memory card adaptor.

Sales and Pricing

The early production costs for the Playstation 3 console models were estimated at US $805.85 for the 20 GB model and US $840.35 for the 60 GB model. When they were released they were priced at $499 and $599. The high manufacturing costs mean that every unit is sold at a loss of approximately $250. Since the original prices were set, they have since fallen further.

Backward Compatibility

The Playstation 3 console has been designed with a backward compatibility, which basically means that both Playstation 1 and 2 games can play on the Playstation 3 console.
